“The dark does not destroy the light; it defines it. It’s our fear of the dark that casts our joy into the shadows.”– Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are.

Have you been avoiding your dreams, settling for a life in the shadows? If fear’s been holding you back, this is for you. Learn to reclaim you dreams like the boss that you are.

Embrace vulnerability

Most of our fears, if not all, are strongly connected to vulnerability. The biggest misconception about vulnerability is that it’s a weakness – yes, it sucks because it makes us feel uncomfortable, uncertain and anxious, but it takes balls to work through. What does that mean? Vulnerability isn’t for the weak – it takes guts, perseverance and commitment to push through. And you know what? It ain’t all that bad.

Brené Brown also said, “vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”

Accept fear and vulnerability as part of the process – a sign that you’re ready to challenge yourself and take the next step forward. It’s just another hoop to jump through when moving towards success.

Detach from the outcome

This little gem has carried me over the fence of fear so many times in both my personal and professional life.

Once the excitement of a new idea or opportunity would fade, fear would creep in and freak me right out. “Can I do this? What if I fail? What will everyone think? What if I make an idiot of myself?” I’d question myself late at night when I should’ve been dreaming.

That was until I learnt to detach from the outcome. Now, when fear rears its ugly head, I remind myself why I’m going ahead, and why it’s so important to me. My questions evolved into statements, focusing on my purpose rather than the outcome. “Success isn’t as important as making a difference. If I don’t succeed, it means more to me that I tried, and that I gave it my best shot. Unless it’s positive or constructive, I don’t care what people think. I care more about making an impact and making a difference in my life, and in the lives of others.”

If you have purpose, be the boss that you are and chase after your dream ruthlessly. Forget about what people will think. Forget about failure. And always remember, although success and approval are great, it’s really fulfillment, accomplishment and happiness you’re after.

Suck it up and go for it

You heard me! Go for it. If you’ve done your homework and prepared yourself for this next step, you’re ready. It’s time to stop over thinking and over fearing – leap right into it. Set yourself apart by working with your vulnerability to push through your fear. Remind yourself why this is so important and let go of whether it’ll work out or not. You’re smart, capable and worthy of living your dream, and achieving your goals. Don’t let fear stand in your way.
