The Importance of Taking Time Out

Being sick was probably the best and worst thing that could’ve happened to me last week. As much as I hated being home, in pain and not being as active as I like, I really enjoyed all the undisrupted time to think, reflect, read and most importantly… sleep.

The past few months have been quite hectic, with the joys (and pains) of studying, working two jobs and launching my own business… all while planning my wedding with my fiancé. Yes! Call me crazy, but I quite enjoy being so busy and feeling so productive. Despite the lack of sleep, missing out on family functions, events and get-togethers with my friends, I kept telling myself that what I was doing was worth the sacrifices I had to make.

Well, that was until I got sick. It was my body’s way of telling me to slow down, catch up, rest… and reflect on what’s really important. I realised I had been in denial, and my body was sending me the message strong and clear – if I didn’t slow down and make more time for rest, I’d crash and burn.

Here’s what you can do to avoid burning out as badly as I did.

Schedule it in

As a busy go-getter, you probably block out time in your diary (or mentally) to attend appointments, meet with important people, attend events… So why shouldn’t you appoint time in your diary for rest and relaxation? If you haven’t, go on and write it in right now. Start appointing the day and time for rest and relaxation, otherwise, your busy schedule will get the better of you and we both know what goes down when that happens – your much needed down time is forgotten or pushed aside.

Make it a priority

Way too often, we’re giving up our sleep to get things done, and without sleep, you’ll probably find you’re low on creativity, patience and even worse, you’re vulnerable to getting sick. From here on out, make it a priority to get 7 – 8 hours of sleep every night.Yeah okay, I know it might sound like a joke – if you said this to me two weeks ago, I would’ve laughed it off… Well, look who’s laughing now.

We know you’ll miss the mark every now and then, but try to be mindful of your sleep when making plans – factor in enough time to get in bed on time so you’re feeling refreshed and refuelled for the next day.

Reward yourself

We know how difficult it is to start your own business, study for great grades, leave your life behind or to spend every waking moment dedicated to your dream. That’s exactly why it’s so important to reward yourself with some TLC when you’ve achieved a goal or when you’re just feeling a little worn out. Whatever it is you like to do – whether it be a bubble bath, curling up with a book, chilling out at the beach or splurging on a delicious meal – make sure you invest in spoiling yourself.

You deserve it! You’ve come this far, so don’t let a burnout ruin your chances of chasing your dream, and being the best you can be.
