Why Do You Need Social Media?

When it comes to business and the digital world, my concept is simple. If you don’t exist online… you don’t exist at all. Think about your first move when you think of something you need to do or buy – you’ll probably Google it, or search it on Facebook or Instagram. If you find it – bingo! And if you don’t, you either give up or give in to whatever comes up on the search results.

It’s no different for your own business, blog or project. If you’re not online, no one outside your group of friends or local area will know about it. And if you’re on a tight (or non-existent) budget, social media is your best bet in terms of getting your idea out there for the world to see. It’s free and advertising can start at as little as $1.

For those of us who live in more remote Pacific communities, having a presence in the online world will set you apart from your competitors – this is important if your vision is long term and if you’re aiming for expansion.

Out of all of the reasons we came up with on why social media is so important, these stood out as the most critical to success.

Brand awareness

Whether you’re a seasoned in business or launching your very first startup, brand awareness is vital – it tells people who you are and what you do, and the more people you can send that message to, the better. Social media allows you to reach people who already know about your brand, and gives you an opportunity to speak directly to people who’ve never heard of your work before. It allows newbies to easily access you for information or contact, and builds a sense of familiarity and trust with existing supporters.

Engagement

One of the best things about sharing your idea with the world is connecting with others who agree and find value in it. Social media is great place for that, because it allows you to build valuable relationships with people with common interests and who work within your industry, which is important for the growth of your business and brand. Through social media, you can find and connect with these people, who will essentially become your online community. It then gives you both a place to easily interact and share ideas, resources and suggestions.

Conversion

Social media isn’t all about the likes! Sure, it’s nice to know your followers approve of your posts enough to double tap the love heart, but it shouldn’t be the measuring stick of how successful you consider your social media content to be. It’s important to keep in mind when posting photos, captions, blog posts, tweets and so on, that one of your main goals (along with brand awareness and engagement) is conversion from likes and clicks to sales.

People like to do business with people, rather than companies, which is what makes social media so great for conversion. There’s a human elemant to it that makes businesses more personable. For example, when you see a post on social media from a business, you might feel as if you’re dealing with a person as opposed to a huge and professional company, like when you’re watching or reading an ad. If you build up enough awareness and engagement, you’ll inevitably build enough trust for people to want to send you a direct message to make an enquiry or order.

Where to from here?

So now that you understand how important social media is, what’s the next step? Well, if you haven’t already, it’s time to set up your accounts and begin creating content and a strategy, which is basically just a clever plan to maximise your biggest  goals – which might be what we’ve just touched on – brand awareness, engagement and conversion.
